Fantasy football: Watch your offense

Here is an unreal statistic that reflects the craziness of the NFL season: There have been 10 quarterbacks who have had a 400-yard passing game so far this season after only five weeks.

The current record for an entire season stands at 13 quarterbacks reaching a 400-yard game.

If you own a pass-heavy QB, it is paying off now more than ever.

There are some matchups that you must exploit at this point in the season, and you should take flyers on potential flex options who have an outside chance of producing in these matchups.

The Philadelphia Eagles put on a clinic for how to not tackle against the Buffalo Bills.

Bills running back Fred Jackson destroyed that unit, as it tried to play two-hand-touch on defense. Jackson accounted for 196 yards and a touchdown. Start any running back playing the Eagles right now until they can mend their defensive woes.

The Green Bay Packers allow the fourth-most passing yards per game, even though they have a solid defense.

Most of this comes from times when the Packers get so far ahead, they focus on not giving up big touchdown plays, so teams are able to accumulate passing yards by throwing underneath.

Plus, the Packers score a lot of points. Usually teams that score a lot of points tend to give up passing yards, as it becomes ‘garbage time’ when they get up.

Go find ‘Oscar The Grouches’ out there who play high-scoring teams like the Packers, Bills, New England Patriots, Oakland Raiders and San Francisco 49ers. All of those teams are in the top 10 of allowing the most passing yards per game.

After his performance against the Kansas City Chiefs, it might be worth it to start Curtis Painter if you are in need of a QB this week, as he faces the Cincinnati Bengals.

The Colts won’t be able to run against the stalwart defensive line of the Bengals, so I might as well recommend wide receiver Pierre Garcon as well.

The Raiders won an emotional game on Sunday, with their longtime owner passing away earlier in the week. This week they come down from the winning high to face the Cleveland Browns, who have had an extra week to prepare.

Browns QB Colt McCoy should produce solid numbers against a secondary defense allowing the eighth most passing yards.

RotoDawg: Injury bug bites stars

Millions of fantasy football team owners might just have seen their seasons crash and burn due to injuries Sunday.

Kansas City Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles is out for the year with a torn ACL. If you had him, you are now facing an uphill battle on scale with trying to beat Joey Chestnut in a hot dog-eating competition.

Houston Texans running back Arian Foster aggravated his hamstring this week. This is a situation that needs to be monitored closely.

Apparently, Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo broke a few ribs in the game against the San Francisco 49ers. It seems as if he will play next week, but watch out if he takes a few big hits.

Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Michael Vick came off the field spitting up blood on Sunday night. He did not return and has a concussion, which could cause him to miss a game.

As for players who are not injured, New England Patriots running back BenJarvus Green-Ellis should have a good week against the Buffalo Bills, who gave up quite a few receiving yards to the Oakland Raiders’ running backs. ‘The Law Firm’ is sneakily shifty and should find the end zone at least once while accumulating respectable yardage totals.

Parents somehow manage to make everything about trust, and fantasy owners are similar. Tennessee Titans wide receiver Kenny Britt has finally received my trust as a must-start option. The same Baltimore Ravens defense that held the Pittsburgh Steelers receivers in check could not contain Britt, who now has 271 yards and three touchdowns over two games. Start him, regardless of the matchup.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Mike Williams must be a magician, because he did his best disappearing act on Sunday. He tallied a single catch for negative four yards against an average Minnesota Vikings secondary. This week he faces the Atlanta Falcons, who gave up 314 net passing yards to the Eagles.

49ers tight end Vernon Davis has been a non-factor thus far. Through two games, he has seven receptions for 65 yards. The 49ers passing attack is struggling, but I think they will rebound against the Cincinnati Bengals this week.

Now, to the mailbag for a reader-posed question. Q: I have Jay Cutler and Kyle Orton as my quarterbacks. Who would you start this week? A: I would lean toward starting Orton this week, as the Green Bay Packers’ defense is stellar and the Chicago Bears’ offensive line looked terrible against the New Orleans Saints.
