Marc Allan assumes role of Collegian interim adviser

INDIANAPOLIS, IN, Sept. 10, 2015 — Loni McKown will no longer be The Butler Collegian’s adviser, after serving five years in that role. The university’s news manager Marc Allan will serve as interim adviser until a permanent replacement can be found.

The change in advisement does not affect the status of the Collegian’s mission or operations. The paper is by the students, of the students and for the students. Our mission is to cover real news and tell important stories that happen on our campus.

Allan will not have prior review, but he will be available to students as a journalistic resource. The adviser provides general advice, leadership, journalistic training and a weekly critique of published content, according to The Collegian’s Staff Manual. This job description will not change.

The Collegian will uphold the Society of Professional Journalists’ Code of Ethics to remain unbiased and to seek and report the truth.

In order to avoid conflicts of interest with Allan, the editorial staff will ask professional journalists for ethical and legal advice on in-depth stories. He will have no prior knowledge of the content before its publication.

Allan worked as a professional journalist at various newspaper publications, including the Indianapolis Star, for more than 20 years. In addition to working in the university relations department, he teaches journalism courses.
