Week of involvement

BLAKELY HEATON | STAFF REPORTER

Last week, Oct. 19-23, was the Week of Involvement at Butler University.  Student Government Association’s internal programming committee presented a second chance after Block Party for students to get involved with different organizations.

Each day, a different types of organizations stood at Star Fountain from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., talking to students about what they do as a group. The Reilly Room served as a backup location in case of rain.

Monday, Oct. 19, was for Academic Clubs and Organizations, and on Tuesday, Oct 20, Volunteer and Service Clubs and Organizations occupied the tables. Wednesday, Oct. 21, was for Greek Life.

Nicole Walker, a junior marketing and accounting student, was participating in Week of Involvement by volunteering to talk to people about her sorority, Delta Delta Delta.

“Not many people have stopped to talk, but I think it is important to provide the opportunity to get involved,” Walker said.

Walker also recalled the success of Block Party and said she thinks that the Week of Involvement could be just as successful if it were better publicized.

Matt Rudd, a first-year biomedical engineering and biology student, said “I was completely unaware Week of Involvement was a program this week. I would have gone if I had known about it because I am interested in going Greek,” Rudd said.

Thomas Baldwin, a sophomore chemistry major, said “It is definitely not as publicly recognized as Block Party.”

Each student who lives in Ross Hall received an email with information on the event. The Butler Connection also publicized the program each day by telling what clubs and organizations are being featured and a photo was posted on SGA’s Instagram account. In contrast, Block Party was publicized on a massive scale via email, flyers and word of mouth. Block Party also had the advantage of time– usually, students are more likely to join organizations at the beginning of the year rather than halfway through the semester.

Thursday Oct. 22, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., the Special Interest Clubs and Organizations were at the Star Fountain. Friday, Oct 22, Club Sports, Multicultural, Spiritual, Performing Arts and Political Clubs and Organizations were outside ending the Week of Involvement.
