Science, Spirit and Steak N Shake

She contemplates getting a drink while she sits in Starbucks slaving over science homework.

Sophomore Laura Sosinski is extremely passionate about health sciences.

“When I grew up, I had a lot of health problems,” she said.

When Sosinski was 7 years old, she was the youngest in her hospital in Chicago to remove a gall bladder.

“Then we also learned that I was born with one kidney,” she said. “Right then is when I decided to do medical and pharmacy.”

But these are not the only health problems she faces, which inspired her to add another major.

“And then the business came because I also have a lot of allergy problems, so I’ve always had to change my medicine, so I’d like to work in regulation,” she said. “There’s only so much I can take with one kidney and allergy problems.”

What she loves about science is that it is always changing.

“My friends saw me as the one who will always forever be the student,” she said.

Sosinski’s passion for medicine and regulation comes with a tough workload. Nevertheless, she loves the challenge and always strives for perfection.

“You can’t do it for the doctorate title and the salary that comes out of it,” she said. “You have to actually be passionate about the subject and you have to be willing to accept the hard times, you have to be willing to stay up till 3 a.m., you have to be willing to miss out on some of the things your friends are doing. And you have to really buckle down.”

She says she is a busy bee and cannot just sit around with nothing to do. She has never even binge-watched Netflix.

“But every once in a while, you need to go to Steak ‘n Shake at 2 a.m. with your friends, and take a break,” she said.
