Butler women’s basketball defeats Providence to snap six-game skid

The Butler University women’s basketball team snapped a six-game skid with a 69-48 road win over Providence College on Feb. 16. The Bulldogs improved to 14-14 on the season and 6-10 in Big East play with the victory.

The two teams went back and forth in the first quarter, with Providence holding on to a two-point lead heading into the second frame following four lead changes. Butler got things going in the second quarter, outscoring Providence 22-8 behind 10 points from junior center Tori Schickel and seven from junior guard Michelle Weaver to take a 35-23 lead into halftime.

Butler built its lead up to as many as 18 points midway through the third quarter. The Bulldogs would struggle to score in the final minutes of the quarter, but still took an 11-point lead into the final 10 minutes of play. Butler then outscored Providence 20-10 in the fourth quarter to secure the win and sweep the season series against the Friars.

Weaver led the Bulldogs with a game-high and personal season-high 20 points, converting seven of 10 shots from the field.

Three other Butler players also finished with double-digit point totals. Redshirt junior guard Whitney Jennings tallied 14 points, while sophomore guard Kristen Spolyar scored 13 points and Schickel collected 12 points along with seven rebounds and six assists. Graduate student guard Iman Lathan led the team with 10 rebounds.

For the game, the Bulldogs outshot the Friars from the field 43 to 31 percent. Butler also out-rebounded Providence 42-34.

The Bulldogs will look to pick up another victory on Feb. 18 at Creighton University. Butler defeated Creighton 59-53 on Jan. 19.
