Butler women’s basketball extends perfect home record after Loyola win

The Butler University women’s basketball team extended their perfect home record to 4-0 with a 64-52 win over Loyola University at Hinkle Fieldhouse on Dec. 18. The Bulldogs improved to 7-4 overall on the season.

Butler went on a 9-0 run to begin the game, keeping Loyola off the scoreboard for the first four minutes of play. After completing the first quarter with a six-point lead, though, the Bulldogs began to stumble in the second quarter after the Ramblers went on an 11-0 scoring run. Three-pointers from redshirt junior guard Whitney Jennings and junior guard Michelle Weaver would help Butler respond and take a seven-point lead into halftime.

Loyola would come back to tie the score quickly into the third quarter, and the two teams remained close for most of the second half, with the Bulldogs holding onto a narrow lead for the majority of the final 20 minutes. Ahead by just one point with just under five minutes remaining, Jennings knocked down a long-range 3-pointer to help Butler pull away and towards victory.

Jennings led the Bulldogs with a game-high 23 points, along with four rebounds. Junior center Tori Schickel finished just shy of a double-double with eight points and a team-high 11 rebounds, while sophomore guard Kristen Spolyar collected 13 points and nine rebounds off the bench.

For the game, the Bulldogs shot 35 percent from the field, compared to 28 percent from the Ramblers. Butler also converted 14 of 15 free throws, whereas Loyola made 11 of 16 shots from the charity stripe.

The Bulldogs will travel to Terre Haute to take on Indiana State University in their final nonconference game on Dec. 21.
