Junior forward Halle Stelbasky began the shootout with a goal. Junior midfielder Brenna Pawelkowski also made her shootout shot, but both of Northwestern’s first shootout shots got past redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Hannah Luedtke.
Following the first two rounds, freshman midfielder Elena Gutlove and junior forward Paige Monaghan could not score, while Northwestern’s Hannah Davidson scored to give the Wildcats a 3-2 lead after four rounds. Freshman forward Caitlyn DiSarcina failed to score for the Bulldogs in the fifth round, ending the shootout.
The scoreless tie in regulation was was split fairly even statistically. Both Northwestern and Butler finished with 10 shots apiece. Monaghan, Stelbasky and junior defender Madison Toth led the Bulldogs with three shots each, respectively. The Bulldogs tallied four shots on goal, while Northwestern only had one.
Butler finishes the season at 13-2-6. They set a school record with a 17-game unbeaten streak this season. Northwestern advances to face UCLA next week in the second round.
