Butler University’s second annual Day of Giving will take place on Feb. 23.

Day of Giving is an event aimed at generating support for Butler student scholarships and the Butler Fund. Alumni, students and friends of Butler come together to make donations.

Marc Allan, the news manager for Butler’s marketing department, said he excited about setting this up for a second year.

“We hope to appeal to anyone with a connection to Butler who wants to make education good and affordable to all students,” Allan said.

This year, Day of Giving is hoping to receive 800 gifts of any size. There are fund matching opportunities set up to double contributions. The first $30,000 that is donated to any of the unrestricted funds, which is money for the six colleges on campus, will be matched.

The first $25,000 donated to the General Scholarship Fund will be matched by Trustee Rick Cummings. The first $10,000 donated to the Parent Fund will be matched.

Last year, Day of Giving recieved $75,000 dollars through 710 gifts, plus an additional $44,000 in challenge funding. Allan believes Butler’s role in the community will help make this goal achievable.

“The overarching hope is that people support us because the like the education they had or the education they’re having,” Allan said.

Butler students are also getting involved in planning the Day of Giving. Claire Shea, a first-year international studies major, is a student volunteer for the event.

“I’m really excited to be a part of this year’s Day of Giving,” Shea said. “We’ve got cool ways for students to get involved. I can’t wait to see what the day brings.”

However, some students feel as though the information about Day of Giving is not being spread enough. Lauryn Rees, a first-year communication sciences and disorders major, is one of these students.

“I honestly haven’t heard about the Day of Giving until just now, but the concept is really cool,” Rees said. “I think who ever is in charge needs to do a better job advertising.”

Butler is encouraging its students to “wear, care and share.” Wear your favorite Butler spiritwear, care to make a donation, and share your excitement on social media using the hashtag #BUdayofgiving.
