Butler men’s cross country finishes 2nd at Big East Championship

Seniors Bobby Johnson, Jonathan Collier and Matt Lumbar lead the way in the Butler Twilight meet on Sept. 1. The team finished second at the Big East Conference championship meet on Oct. 28.

Butler men’s cross country finished second at Big East Conference championships in Kenosha, Wisconsin at Wayne Dennehl National Course on Oct. 28. The men were led by freshman Barry Keane who finished fifth individually.

Keane finished the 8k course with a time of 24:52.5. He was followed closely behind by senior Matt Lumbar who finished sixth (24:55.4).

All five of Butler’s scores were in the top 20. Junior Johnny Leverenz (25:04.5) finished in 10th place, while sophomores Evan Johnson (25:10.5) and Euan Makepeace (25:23.3) finished 14th and 19th, respectively. Butler’s total team score was 54.

Senior Johnathan Collier and sophomore Eric Baugh finished 23rd and 29th to round out the Butler runners.

Georgetown’s Jonathan Green won the individual title leading the Hoyas to a Big East team title as well.

The women’s team was led by sophomore Josephine Thestrup who finished 17th finishing the 6k course in 21:05.8. Thestrup was followed by freshman Angelina Ellis (21:56.3) who came in 32nd in her first Big East Championship race.

Senior Hannah Hartzell finished 39th followed by freshman Camille Hines and sophomore Kristen Johnson who finished 47th and 51st. Butler finished with a team score of 186.

Sophomore Kara Stark and freshman Allison Miller rounded out the lineup for the Bulldogs.

Providence senior Catarina Rocha won the individual title while the wildcats of Villanova won the Big East Championship team title.

Butler cross country will be back in action at the Hoosier Invitational on Nov. 3 before participating in the Great Lakes Regional meet in Terre Haute, Indiana on Nov. 10.
