On Jan. 24, the Indiana Appeals Court will be visiting Butler to host an ongoing case for the students and staff to observe.

The event will be held at 11 a.m. in the Eidson-Duckwall Recital Hall. There will be a reception at 1 p.m. for students and staff to ask questions. The reception will be held in Ford Salon. The three judges on the case as well as the prosecuting and defending teams will be present at the event.

Andres Salerno is a first-year pre-law student majoring in biology and chemistry. He views this as an experience pertaining to his field.

“I’m excited about attending my first courtroom experience and seeing how it all works,” Salerno said.

The case started in Greencastle, Indiana, after a truck that was pulled over for driving without taillights was found to have 25 grams of methamphetamine. The defendant, Otis Sams, argues the search of his vehicle violated his Fourth Amendment rights.

Rusty Jones, the faculty director for the Center for High Achievement and Scholarly Engagement and Honors Program, put the event on to help show students and faculty insight into a real-life court case.

“I think it’s a great educational opportunity for campus,” Jones said. “Whatever one’s career goal may be, I hope it’ll be a really educational experience for everyone involved.”
