Butler University has raised parking permit prices for the second time in three years. The university sent an email to faculty, staff and students Wednesday detailing permit prices and policies for the 2015-16 school year.

Permits for the I-Lot will cost $100. Permits for the I-Lot, which was constructed in 2013 to alleviate parking issues, cost $75 for the past two years.

Permits for the B-lot (for use in the Schwitzer, Ross and Residential College parking lots), apartment village, and “T” permits (University Terrace, Christian Theological Seminary and Butler Terrace) will cost $225. These permits cost $200 for the past two years.

There are a limited number of B-permits available on a first-come, first-served basis. After all B-permits have been allotted, students in residence halls will need to purchase an I-Lot permit.

Greek parking permits will also cost $225, up from the previous price of $200.

Commuter parking permits will cost $125, and will include access to the newly constructed Sunset Avenue garage. Commuter permits cost $95 the past two years.

The Sunset Avenue garage is set to open in mid-August, according to a release sent June 30 by Ben Hunter, chief of staff and chief of Butler police. Five-hundred spaces will be available on August 15, and the remaining spots in the garage will be accessible by mid-September.

Faculty and staff (A-permits) have several options for parking. Year-long permits are available for $125, semester-long permits are $70, or they can purchase a “garage-only” permit for $5 and pay the Sunset Avenue parking fees.

Faculty permits were $95 for the past two years, with the only option being a year-long permit.

All parking permits were $75 during the 2012-13 school year and $60 during the 2011-12 school year, according to the Butler Collegian article “Butler announces addition of parking lot, changes to permits,” published July 29, 2013.

In 2012, the university announced a freeze on permit prices that would keep all permits at $75 for two years, according to the Butler Collegian article “Reaction to parking changes varies,” published August 28, 2013. The decision to raise the prices in 2013 was made by the city of Indianapolis and the Butler University parking committee in order to address a parking shortage on campus.
