The Butler Bulldogs (2-0-2) faced off against Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (0-3-1) Saturday and tied 1-1.
Just under five minutes into the game, Cougars forward Christian Volesky found the back of the net. Jason Hackett was credited with the assist.
In the 13th minute of the first half, Butler junior Caleb Postlewait scored on a penalty kick that would prove to be the final goal of the contest.
Butler had numerous other chances, including a header by Joey Bastian in extra time that went just wide of the goal, but was unable to convert.
Goalkeeper Eric Dick saved a penalty kick in the 93rd minute to preserve the tie. Dick saved seven shots in the contest.
Butler was outshot 17-6.
Butler will return to the Butler Bowl on Tuesday night, to face Valparaiso at 7:00 p.m.
