The Butler women’s soccer team fell for the first time in 2018 in a 1-0 loss to No. 19 Kansas on Sept. 2. The match went scoreless for over 80 minutes before Elise Reina netted an 85th-minute goal that sealed the win for the Jayhawks.

The first half was defined by defense on both sides as neither team was able to come up with a decent chance without being heavily contested by the opposition. Kansas led the shot count 3-1 in the first 45 minutes.

After the break, both teams found their comfort zones in a second half that saw them combine for 12 shots and four corner kicks.

Arguably, Butler’s best chance of the match came in the 56th minute off the foot of Morgan Kloosterman. Katie Soderstrom sent a ball in from the right side that brought Kansas goalkeeper Sarah Peters out of position. Kloosterman came up with the ball and sent it wide left to keep the match scoreless.

The lone goal of the match came off a Jayhawks corner kick by Katie McClure who drove the chance into the box. The ball took a quick bounce before Reina was able to give Butler their first deficit of the 2018 season. The Bulldogs had gone over 195 minutes without conceding a goal to an opponent.

The Bulldogs now sit at 4-1 on the season ahead of a Sept. 5 matchup with in-state foe Evansville.
