Butler women’s basketball picks up second win at Murray State

The women’s team meets during a timeout. They are 2-0 this season.

Backed by strong performances from Tori Schickel and Kristen Spoylar, the Butler University women’s basketball team picked up its second win of the season on Nov. 15, defeating Murray State University 88-59 on the road.

Butler had the upper hand from the start, going on a 14-0 scoring run to begin the game. The Bulldogs outscored the Racers 38-18 in the first half. Butler then added 50 points in the second half of play compared to 41 from Murray State.

Schickel led the way for the Bulldogs with 29 points and 8 rebounds for the game. The junior center was 12-19 from the floor and also picked up two assists.

Though not in the starting lineup, Spolyar scored the second most points for the Bulldogs. The sophomore guard picked up 18 points, with 13 coming in the second half. Spoylar was 6-7 from the floor and knocked down 2 three-pointers.

Junior guard Michelle Weaver and sophomore forward Shae Brey were also key contributors for Butler. Weaver contributed 10 points and 4 rebounds, while Brey tallied 8 rebounds in addition to 5 points.

For the game, Butler shot 61 percent from the field, compared to 32 percent from Murray State. The Bulldogs also connected for 50 percent of their three-point shots, whereas their opponent shot just 19 percent from beyond the arc.

The Bulldogs return to Hinkle for their next game on Nov. 17 against Lipscomb University.
