The Butler University softball team went 1-4 at the Mardi Gras Invitational in Mobile, Alabama this weekend. The Bulldogs’ lone win came against Jackson State University on Feb. 18, 10-4.

In the first game on Feb. 17, the Murray State University Racers jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first inning. The Bulldogs lost 9-1 in five innings. Junior third baseman Alyssa Lach knocked in Butler’s lone run.

“I think we learned that we have some things to work on,” sophomore outfielder Jenna Foreman said. “We need to be more consistent.”

The second game that day saw Butler drop a 2-0 decision to host University of South Alabama. Freshman pitcher Gabbi Schnaiter took the tough loss, allowing just two runs while scattering five hits.

“We can’t ever give up or let up,” Foreman said. “We just need to trust our abilities and our teammates.”

The Bulldogs defeated Jackson State University in the Feb. 18 early game by a score of 10-4. Sophomore infielder/pitcher Kaitlin Doud got the start in the circle for the Bulldogs. Doud went four innings for the win, Foreman went 4-for-4, and junior outfielder Sarah Dixon hit her first homerun of the season.

Junior infielder Maggie MacBeth, who played for the first time since last season, said that it felt great to get the rust off this past weekend.

“It was awesome to play in the warm weather,” MacBeth said. “We have a lot of work to do before conference, but we have the capacity to make an incredible run like last year.”

Butler lost to McNeese State University 7-1 later in the day. Dixon had two of the Bulldogs’ five hits in the game.

The Bulldogs fell to 4-6 on the season after their second loss to Murray State on Feb. 19. The Racers scored six runs in the fifth inning. Dixon was 3-for-4, while Foreman and freshman infielder Madi Christiansen had two hits apiece.

Butler will travel to Columbia, Missouri, to partake in a tournament hosted by University of Missouri. The tournament will be held March 3-5.
