The men’s basketball team will continue their homestand with a matchup against Austin Peay on Nov. 8. The Dawgs are 1-0 after a victory over Missouri State where fifth-year forward Jahmyl Telfort dropped 29 points — his most in his time with Butler. Sophomore guard Finley Bizjack was available despite an ankle injury but never entered the game.
Here is what you need to know before tip-off against the Governors:
Who: Butler vs. Austin Peay
When: Nov. 8, 6:30 p.m.
Where: Hinkle Fieldhouse
How to watch: Fox Sports 2
Sloppy basketball
Although Butler won against Missouri State, it certainly was not pretty. The Dawgs had a whopping 19 turnovers on the night, six of which came from starting senior guard Pierre Brooks. Those turnovers led to 27 Missouri State points, which made the game a lot closer than it needed to be.
Head coach Thad Matta stressed that this was unlike his team and they will continue to work on taking care of the basketball.
Despite the turnover troubles, the Bulldogs performed well in other categories. Butler shot better than their opponent, outrebounded the Bears and even got to the free-throw line 28 times. As the Dawgs continue to work through their non-conference schedule, clean basketball has to be their priority.
Scouting report
The Austin Peay Governors are coming off a 95-75 victory over Union to start off their season. The Governors never trailed in their first game and had five in double figures.
Two players to watch are senior guard Isaac Hanley and junior guard Tekao Carpenter. Hanley led the team with 19 points and Carpenter went 5-5 from three-point range to finish with 15 points in his first official game with Austin Peay.
The Governors also thrived from the charity stripe. Austin Peay went 24 of 26 from the free-throw line. The Dawgs have to stick to the clean basketball game, which includes limiting the Governors’ trips to the line.
Butler needs to show their fans they are here to play this season, and what better way to do that than a blowout win on Friday night in Hinkle Fieldhouse.
