The Butler lacrosse team lost its second straight game to start the season. Detroit Mercy beat the Bulldogs 17-13 in Michigan on Feb. 19.

For the second straight game, Butler surrendered the first three goals.

Similar to the last game, the Bulldogs answered back quickly and kept it close for the entire first half.

Goals by sophomore attackers Ashley Guerra and Karina Latsko put Butler on the board.

After falling behind 5-2, Butler received goals from freshman midfielder Holly Hall and Guerra, which cut the deficit to one.

After again finding themselves down three, Butler scored three in a row — their best stretch of the contest — to tie the game. Guerra scored again before senior midfielder Haley Hallenbeck put in two goals.

The teams traded goals twice before Detroit Mercy ended the half with a goal with less than 40 seconds before the break to take a 10-9 lead. Butler’s goals came from Latsko and Hallenbeck.

Like in the previous game against Duquesne, a four-goal swing by Detroit Mercy early in the second half put Butler out of reach.

Guerra scored again to cut the deficit to three, but Butler never cut it below four the rest of the way.

Another Guerra goal — her fifth of the contest — combined with goals by freshman attacker Kailee Callaghan and sophomore midfielder Ashley Steffes closed out the scoring for Butler.

Butler fell to 0-2 with the loss and will host Kent State on Feb. 22.
