Butler women’s basketball improves to 2-1 in conference play with win over Georgetown

The Butler University women’s basketball team improved to 2-1 in conference play with a 66-57 road victory over Georgetown University on Jan. 5. The team has won six of its last seven games and is now 10-5 overall for the season.

The Bulldogs got off to a slow start in the game, with Georgetown going on a 10-0 scoring run in the first quarter after an early Butler basket. But the Bulldogs were able to respond, tying up the game at the end of the first quarter with a 10-0 run of their own. Butler maintained a slim lead for much of the second quarter before entering halftime with a five-point lead.

While the Hoyas briefly retook the lead midway through the third quarter, the second half was mostly dominated by the Bulldogs, who limited Georgetown to just five made field goals in the final twenty minutes of play. Butler pulled ahead by double digits in the fourth quarter on the way to the victory.

Junior center Tori Schickel and redshirt junior guard Whitney Jennings combined to score 54 of Butler’s 66 points. Schickel led the team with game-highs in both points (28) and rebounds (15), picking up her seventh double-double of the season. Jennings contributed 26 points and five rebounds, and knocked down all five of Butler’s 3-pointers.

Sophomore forward Shae Brey, senior forward Kaela Hodges, and graduate student guard Iman Lathan combined for 18 rebounds. Sophomore guard Kristen Spolyar, who ranks third on the team in points this season, did not play due to illness.

For the game, Butler shot roughly 45 percent from the field, compared to just over 30 percent from Georgetown. Butler also out-rebounded Georgetown 44-33.
