Softball: California swing results in struggles

A seven-game trip to Fresno, Calif., did not go well for the Butler softball team, as the Bulldogs (4-13) fell in all seven contests.

The first five games of the series were part of the 2012 Bayer CropScience Classic, which was hosted by Fresno State.

In the three-day event, Butler lost 10-2 to San Diego State (16-16), 6-0 to No. 15 Oregon (18-4), 14-1 to No. 1 California (25-1), 9-1 to Fresno State (19-12) and 10-8 to Connecticut (6-10).

The Golden Bears of California came away as the tournament champions, winning all five of their games.

Following the tournament, Butler stayed in Fresno to take on Purdue and Fresno State.

The Bulldogs dropped both of those games, losing 3-0 to the Boilermakers (15-9) and 12-1 to Fresno State.

Butler was scheduled to travel to University of the Pacific in Oregon to take on Colorado State and Pacific, but the games were postponed due to inclement weather.

After playing 17 road games to start their season, the Bulldogs will come back to Indianapolis to host Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne and Miami of Ohio in separate two-game series tomorrow and and Thursday, respectively.
