Butler women’s basketball falls to No. 17 University of Southern Florida

The Butler University women’s basketball team fell to No. 17 University of Southern Florida 71-55 on the road in their first loss of the season on Nov. 20.

The Bulldogs matched the Bulls early on, completing the first quarter tied at 17. USF pulled away in the second quarter, limiting Butler to 8 points while scoring 23. Butler kept pace in the second half, scoring just one less point than USF, but wasn’t able to overcome the rough second quarter.

Junior center Tori Schickel led the way for the Bulldogs, collecting her second consecutive double-double with 18 points and 15 rebounds. Redshirt junior guard Whitney Jennings tied Schickel with a team-high 18 points to go along with four assists and three rebounds.

Butler also got ten points off the bench from sophomore guard Kristen Spolyar. Junior guard Michelle Weaver added 5 points before fouling out, and sophomore forward Shae Brey and senior forward Kaela Hodges each added 2 points to complete the scoring for the Bulldogs.

For the game, Butler shot 35.4 percent from the field, compared to 46 percent from USF. The Bulls shot nearly 60 percent from field in the first half, while the Bulldogs shot just under 40 percent.

The Bulldogs will take on No. 11 West Virginia University on Nov. 23 in the first contest of the three-game Paradise Jam tournament in Melbourne, Florida. Butler will then square off against Virginia Tech University and Drexel University over the next two days of the tournament.
