Men’s soccer stays perfect in Providence

The Butler men’s soccer team stayed unbeaten Saturday night with a 2-0 win over Providence. The Bulldogs’ record improved to 6-0-3 overall and 2-0 in BIG EAST play. Providence fell to 4-4-1 (0-2).

Senior Vincent Mitchell broke the scoreless tie early in the second half with a goal assisted by Marco Charalambous. This was Mitchell’s team-high eighth goal on the season.

Another goal was added 12 minutes later after a header by Kieran Geldenhuys just in front of the goal line for the 2-0 lead. The header was Geldenhuys first career goal at Butler.

The first half of the game produced very few scoring opportunities for either team. The best was in the 44th minute after Providence’s Klisman Sousa drew a corner kick. Sousa’s header after the corner kick, however, ended up wide right.

In the final 10 minutes of the match, Butler held off Providence’s offensive attempts. Mike Kozielek blocked a shot attempt, and Joe Moulden cleared a ball from the goal like after keeper Eric Dick was drawn out. Dick tallied four saves and reached his fourth shutout on the season.

Providence’s late offense gave them 12-11 and 6-5 advantages in both shots and corner kicks respectively.

The Bulldogs take the field again on Tuesday when they will face SIU-Edwardsville at the Butler Bowl for their last non-conference matchup of the season.
