Tennis Recap

MITCH RIPORTELLA | Staff Reporter

Butler men’s tennis spilt their final two matches of the regular season this weekend with a win over Creighton and a loss at Marquette.

The team started its weekend with its first conference win of the season, defeating Creighton 5-2.

The Bulldogs got off to a bumpy start, surrendering the doubles point after loses in No. 1 and No. 2 singles, but would more then make up for it in singles play. The Bulldogs rallied, winning five of the remaining six singles matches to secure the teams’ first-ever Big East Conference victory.

Junior Tommy Marx got the ball rolling for the Bulldogs after picking up a 4-6, 6-1, 6-1 win in the No. 5 spot.

The Bulldogs would cruise from that point on, winning the final four matches of the day. Also picking up wins for the Bulldogs were juniors Alex Woldmoe and Sam O’Neil in the No. 2 and 3 spots, and sophomore Brandon Woods, who squeaked out a 3-6, 7-6, 7-6 nail-biter in the No. 4 spot.

The Bulldogs’ momentum did not roll into Sunday when Butler took on another division rival in Marquette University.

Butler took a 6-1 loss to the Golden Eagles to finish their regular season play, and finish the season with a 10-9 record.

Marquette steamrolled through Butler’s line up, winning all matches in straight sets with the exception of one.

Woods managed to pick up his second win of the weekend in dramatic fashion, once again coming from behind in a 5-7, 6-3, 1-0 thriller in the No. 4 spot.

The men’s and women’s team will travel to tomorrow to New York tomorrow for their first ever Big East Conference Tournament.

The No. 5 seeded men’s team has been matched up with the No.4 seeded Xavier. The Bulldogs will attempt to avenge a 6-1 loss to Xavier on April 11 in the form of their first ever Big East tournament win.

The Butler women’s team will travel to New York ranked tenth out of the ten teams competing in the tournament. The Bulldogs will take on seventh ranked Creighton. The Bulldogs (4-16) will have their hands full with the Bluejays (11-8) as they search for their first conference victory.
