Students Speak: Is bringing iced coffee to a job interview unprofessional?

Recent threads on social media platforms, such as TikTok and Instagram, have sparked debates on whether or not bringing iced coffee to a job interview is unprofessional. We asked Butler students their thoughts on this topic, based on their personal experience and individual expectations they have during the interviewing process.

Shyanna Itza, a sophomore accounting and finance double major, mentioned how iced coffee doesn’t have that big of an impact on the interview:

“I mean, it’s just a drink. It’s just like bringing water to an interview.”

Chayse Radcliff, a first-year strategic communication major, discussed the potential difficulties bringing iced coffee to an interview could cause:

“Having an iced coffee in the interview … I’m gonna be fidgeting with [it] the entire time. It would be not professional because I think that it would make me distracted.”

Sophomore health sciences major Chloe Shadiow talked about her thoughts on the level of professionalism bringing iced coffee depicts:

“I think it actually depends on what type of job interview it is. Being professional can look different in many different jobs … I think the level of professionalism where you might bring an iced coffee could be more like an entry level job.”

First-year psychology major Allison Ulloa highlighted how bringing iced coffee could skew your interviewers first impression of you:

“What if it’s a really huge company that you’re going into, and every five seconds you’re sipping iced coffee. I feel like that will give them a bad expression of you.”
