Watermelon shoes, shirts and giant pool floats were all over campus for the conclusion of Lambda Chi Alpha’s Watermelon Bust on Saturday.

The philanthropy event benefits Feeding America and Gleaners Food Bank. The fraternity raised money and collected food for the two organizations.

Watermelon Bust helped Lambda Chi Alpha surpass their goal of $4,500 to give to Gleaners Food Bank of Indiana. The fraternity also set a goal of 700 pounds in food donation.

This year, Lambda reached out to the Butler-Tarkington community as well as the Butler Lab School.

Matt Condon, Lambda member, elementary education major and junior, helped organize the event.

“I was very happy with the turnout,” Condon said. “We even got a very generous donation from The Butler Lab School, which is cool to me. We also had an online donation link which helped us out a lot.”

Condon and his brothers said they were a little discouraged because of some schedule-altering events early in the philanthropy, and because they had to change the time of the Watermelon Bust due to Butlerpalooza.

However, Condon said the event turned out successful.

“We basically had a lot of watermelons and we came up with a bunch of different ways to play games with them,” Condon said.

Saturday’s fun and games included watermelon pong, a watermelon relay, the election of watermelon Queen Lauren Qualls and a lip sync battle won by Delta Gamma.

Kate Hahn, business major, sophomore and member of Kappa Alpha Theta, was at the event.

“My friend and I totally embarrassed ourselves in watermelon pong, but it was fun,” Hahn said.  “Everyone was just smashing some melons and it was a great time.”

Who knew that smashing watermelons could create such a difference and help the community?

There is much more philanthropy to come on Butler’s campus, though it might not be as much fun to clean up.
