The Butler athletic department announced Wednesday that it will be adding women’s lacrosse as a new varsity sport. The addition will give Butler 20 varsity sports and the team will begin play during the 2016-2017 school year, according to an athletic department press release.

Butler Vice President and Athletic Director Barry Collier made the announcement, and said that it will help the school grow in important areas of the country.

“The addition of women’s lacrosse as a varsity sport provides Butler with the opportunity to deepen relationships in portions of the country that continue to be very important to the University, especially Indiana, the Midwest and the East Coast,” Collier said, according to the release. “We look forward to partnering with the lacrosse community locally, regionally and nationally to build a program that will be successful on and off the field for many years.”

A national search for a head coach will begin immediately.
