Track and Field earns honors at Big East Championships

The Butler men’s and women’s track and field teams capped their inaugural season in the Big East with fifth place finishes at the conference meet this weekend.

Butler placed in 10 events overall.

Senior Kirsty Legg took first place in the 1500-meter event, setting a school record with a time of 4:16.72. Legg set the previous record of 4:17.78 in 2012.

Junior Nicole Hudec took home a pair of medals, placing first in the triple jump, setting a Butler record with a jump of 40-00.50 feet and besting her previous record of 38-04.25 set in 2013. Hudec also placed third in the long jump.

Juniors Bria Booker, Katie Good and Mara Olson all finished as runner-up in their respective events, as did freshman Colleen Weatherford.

Booker finished with 3,524 points in the women’s heptathlon while Good finished the 10,000-meter run in 35:09.54. Olson finished the 5,000-meter run in 16:29.09 and Weatherford finished the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 10:39.

The men’s team had several medal-winners as well.

Junior Nigel Spears placed third in the triple jump while sophomore Erik Peterson placed third in the 5,000-meter event. The Butler 4×100 team of Matthew Schumaker, Andrew Shroyer, Spears and Andrew Wallace finished third as well.

Villanova claimed both the men’s and women’s titles.
