The Butler softball team (8-19, 0-2) opened its first Big East Conference season against Creighton, dropping both of a doubleheader. The third game, scheduled for Sunday, was cancelled due to weather.

Creighton’s offense was too much for Butler to overcome. Butler used three different pitchers in the two games. The trio surrendered a combined 22 hits, 16 runs and six home runs.

Butler dropped the opener 6-0, collecting four hits. Sophomore Kristen Gutierrez (5-8) allowed six runs in 5.2 innings while striking out four.

Senior Callie Dennison made her season debut on the mound in relief, pitching 1.1 scoreless innings. It was Dennison’s first time in the circle since her freshman year.

“I had no idea I was going in the first game–that was not the original plan,” Dennison said. “It didn’t hit me until after the game when I was sore that I actually pitched. Now that I have had a day to think about, it I’ll be ready to pitch in future games too.”

The Bulldog’s offense continued to struggle in the second game, as the team fell 10-0.

The Bulldogs’ will try to snap a four-game losing streak when the Northern Kentucky Norse (3-21) come into town for a doubleheader this afternoon.
