Dan and Phil have been making YouTube content for nearly two decades. The pair met in 2009 and have accrued a modest 3.1 million subscribers over the course of more than 500 videos.
On Oct. 4, Clowes Memorial Hall will host the British comedy duo as a stop on their Hard Launch Tour, the name of which playfully references their relationship status. Nearly one year ago, the two announced via video that they had been in a romantic relationship since meeting each other.
Senior strategic communication major Allison Pfefferkorn has observed the speculation from fellow fans surrounding the pair’s relationship.
“They were frequently together, and [viewers] were always, as they do with people online, like, ‘Oh, they’re gay,’ and [Dan and Phil] were like, ‘No, we’re not,’” Pfefferkorn said. “Then they just came out, and they’re like, ‘We are actually [gay],’ which is pretty awesome that they developed a community that was so supportive.”
Throughout much of its tenure, the channel was known as DanAndPhilGAMES, but the duo rebranded to just their names in late 2025. In addition to their main YouTube channel, the pair cohost a podcast titled “HARD LAUNCH”. While mainly centered around gaming, the channel also hosts videos featuring comedic challenge-style premises like “Trying to Name 100 Women”.
Hard Launch Tour is not their first foray into live stage performances; Dan and Phil previously hosted multiple live tours in 2015, 2017 and 2024.
Avery Terry, a senior history and German double major, believes the duo’s content will translate well into a live-stage format.
“I think comedians are really good at engaging audiences,” Terry said. “I feel like they’re probably interactive with people and are pretty good at engaging a crowd … since they can’t really do gaming on stage, they do fun interactive [segments], like [having] the audience vote on stuff.”
In recent years, more and more YouTube personalities have branched out into adapting their content into stage performances, such as commentary channel Kurtis Conner and longtime collaborators Rhett & Link. Just last year, Trisha Paytas made an appearance at Butler’s very own Clowes Memorial Hall for her set of comedic songs in the Taylor Swift-inspired The Eras of Trish Tour.
However, Dan and Phil’s The Amazing Tour is Not On Fire in 2015 is an early example of a successful live YouTuber tour, giving them something of a veteran status in the YouTube community.
Sam Gulotta, a senior film and media production and critical communication and media studies double major, spoke about how their stage performances have changed with time.
“I saw them in 2019, and [in] that show the theme was ‘giving the people what they want,’” Gulotta said. “They did skits and games to get the audience [involved] … When I saw them two years ago they had [been on] a five-year hiatus, it was them coming back and reintroducing themselves.”
The two have grown alongside their audience, being in their thirties and continuing to tour live for over a decade.
For some, like Terry, the Dan and Phil show is a reminder of the importance of in-person arts events.
“Even if you don’t know everything about a performer, I think consuming and attending in-person comedy shows, live theater, anything like that, is super, super important to support the arts in general,” Terry said. “I’m definitely a huge supporter of that.”
Having the opportunity to watch these creators outside of heavily-edited streamed videos is a unique experience; while social media allows plenty of opportunities to engage with online personalities, the chance to interact with them live and in-person is one of a kind. Whether one is an avid Dan and Phil fan or a casual onlooker, the pair promises a night of outrageous oversharing and scream-laughing.
