Why attend: The Beta Upsilon Chapter of Kappa Psi connects Butler pharmacy students, helping them build professional networks and participate in community service events. This event is perfect for new pharmacy students interested in membership and will allow them to meet current members of Kappa Psi in a comfortable, informal environment.
2. Theta Lip Syncs and Mr. Theta
When: Sept. 3 at 6 p.m.
Where: Kappa Alpha Theta, 825 W Hampton Dr.
Why attend: The Gamma Chapter of Kappa Alpha Theta is concluding their philanthropy week by hosting lip-sync battles between fraternities and announcing the winner of their Mr. Theta contest. Each fraternity on campus nominates a Mr. Theta candidate, who is tasked with making an informational video about Kappa Alpha Theta’s official philanthropy — National CASA/GAL Association for Children. The organization supports court-appointed volunteer advocacy for youth in the child welfare system. Any student is welcome to show up with no registration or fee required.

Why attend: Butler’s University Program Council (UPC) invites Bulldogs to gather a group of friends and engage in a good-natured trivia competition. This event is the perfect time to catch up with old friends or make new ones while testing general knowledge. Perks include free food for all and special prizes for teams with the most factoids. This event is free and open for registration.
4. BSU Cookout
When: Sept. 4 at 6 p.m.
Where: Dugan Hall 118 and Fairview fire pits
Why attend: The Black Student Union (BSU) will host a cookout as their first event of the academic year. Take this time to get to know fellow students and play games, all while supporting the organization. This event is free and open for registration.
When: Sept. 5 at 9 a.m.
Where: Indy Acres Paintball
Why attend: UPC is taking students to Indy Acres Paintball, which is a large outdoor paintball field in Indianapolis. Kick off Labor Day weekend by getting outside the Butler bubble and creating new memories with friends, both old and new. While normally the lowest-priced package runs at $29, for Butler students who register in time, this activity will be absolutely free. Registration is currently open.
6. Duckwall Artist Series: Pam Ajango, oboe and Zach Cooper, horn
When: Sept. 8 at 7:30 p.m.
Where: Eidson-Duckwall Recital Hall
Why attend: Start the semester by fulfilling a Butler Cultural Requirement (BCR). This concert features performances by esteemed musicians Pam Ajango and Zach Cooper. In addition to being a tenured oboist for the Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra, Ajango is an adjunct professor of oboe at Butler. She has performed for Broadway shows, toured internationally and is featured on recordings as both a chamber musician and a soloist. Cooper is an associate professor of horn at Butler and was recently appointed principal horn of the Carmel Symphony Orchestra. Throughout his career, he has played with dozens of orchestras and has founded several chamber groups.
Indianapolis events
When: Sept. 3-6
Where: The Stutz, 1060 N Capitol Ave.
Why attend: BUTTER Fine Art Fair highlights Black artists from all corners of Indiana. As a no-commission fair, artists earn 100% of the proceeds from their sales and do not have to pay to participate. In addition to art galleries, DJ performances and panelist conversations, the four-day event will feature food and drinks from beloved Indianapolis staples like Ash & Elm Cider Co., Little India and more. Students 18 and under can attend for free and daily general admission tickets run for $44.52.
When: Sept. 6 at 12 p.m.
Where: Highland Park
Why attend: All students are welcome to bring a book, a friend and a blanket to read at Highland Park in downtown Indianapolis. This event is completely free — including parking. Participants are invited to relax, dance, read, listen to music and discover new favorite books.
When: Sept. 8 at 6 p.m.
Where: Admiral Spruance Basin
Why attend: Destress from back-to-school season with a free yoga class hosted by Hot Room. This is a beginner-friendly class for people with varying levels of yoga experience. Registration is encouraged and mats are not provided.
