BREAKING: Smeathers to leave men’s basketball team

Junior guard Andrew Smeathers has announced his intention to leave the Butler men’s basketball team, according to butlersports.com.

The reason for Smeathers’ departure is unclear. In a press release, Smeathers said it had nothing to do with issues pertaining to any Butler players or coaches.

“This is definitely one of the hardest decisions of my life,” Smeathers said in the release. “I’ve loved Butler ever since I arrived here— evreything from the basketball, my coaches, my teammates to the school and the individuals I’ve met. I leave here on good terms with my coaches and teammates.”

Smeathers will complete his fall semester of classes at Butler before transferring to another school. It is not clear what school that might be at this time.

““We appreciate everything Andrew has done for the Butler basketball program over the past two-plus years,” Miller said. “We wish him all the best as he moves forward.”

Smeathers participated in both of Butler’s preseason games, tallying eight total points despite dealing with a quad injury. He also dealt with offseason hip surgery after his freshman season.

The Collegian will continue to update the story as more information becomes available.
