Butler’s student organization Manuscripts offers the Martone Traveling Grant to student writers.

For students who love to write, Manuscripts provides an opportunity for them to showcase their work. Anyone, regardless of major, can join the organization. During the spring semester, Manuscripts publishes a free magazine that features stories, art and poetry written not only by Butler students, but also by any undergraduate attending an Indiana university.

The grant starts with a proposal, which is submitted through Manuscripts’ website. Once the proposal is accepted, the student travels somewhere in Indiana and writes about the experience. He or she is reimbursed for the trip and has the potential to be published in the Manuscripts magazine.

Senior music and psychology double major Emily Farrer has been a part of the Manuscripts staff since her first year and currently serves as associate editor. She said the grant encourages students to travel and give them fresh ideas to write about.

“We’d love to get as many submissions as possible,” Farrer said. “Any student who loves to travel and loves to write, this is the ideal opportunity for them.”

Michael Martone established the grant in honor of his mother and father, Patricia and Anthony Martone. Michael, a Butler alumnus who wrote for Manuscripts, has written more than a dozen books and currently teaches at the University of Alabama.

Manuscripts editor-in-chief Emily Yoo said Michael believes in teaching and learning through creativity.

“Michael Martone was one of those students who always thought outside the box and was passionate about fostering creative energy on campus,” Yoo said. “So, of course it makes sense that he comes back to his alma mater and continues his legacy of supporting creative writing.”

Proposals for the grant can be submitted at any time and will be accepted on a rolling basis.
