Women’s tennis gets historic win

For the first time in program history, the Butler women’s tennis team defeated Xavier.

The Bulldogs (2-3) defeated the Musketeers (3-5), 5-2, on Wednesday afternoon, when they won two of three doubles matches and all but the top two singles match.

Senior and No. 4 singles player Gabriela Bobrowski said she was proud of the team because Xavier was an even matchup for Butler.

“The reason we defeat teams that are at our level is because we want it more,” she said. “The more competitive team takes it.”

The Bulldogs survived an onslaught of long rallies and grinding play.

“They play long points because they have tough players,” Bobrowski said. “In my singles match, I made a point to be aggressive and tried to end points early for that reason.”

By a score of 6-2, 6-4, Bobrowski defeated Musketeer senior Kelsey Kinnard, who defeated three Bulldogs during the fall season.

The No. 3 singles match was a face-off between two freshmen. Butler’s came out on top, when Caroline Hedrick defeated Andrea Wolf, 6-1, 2-6, 6-4.

The No. 2 singles match was the only other match to go three sets. Musketeer senior Tifanie Treece defeated Bulldog freshman baseliner Stephanie McLoughlin, 6-4, 4-6, 2-6.

Butler’s next match is tonight at Illinois State at 7 p.m. EDT. The following afternoon, the Bulldogs will host Evansville, the alma mater of Butler head coach Jason Suscha.

“Everyone on the team is excited for the upcoming matches,” Bobrowski said. “Right now, we can’t get enough tennis and are ready to compete.”
