Lightning strike leaves much of campus without power

Butler University officials suspect a lightning strike may be the reason that power is out in most of the campus’s buildings.

Around 3:30 p.m., the Butler University Police Department sent an alert about a possible lightning strike to Butler’s power plant, located behind Schwitzer Hall.

The outage affects all campus buildings except for Apartment Village, BUPD and Ross Hall. BUPD and AV use a separate power grid, Chief of Staff and Executive Director of Public Safety Ben Hunter said. Ross Hall has a backup generator.

“It’s real bad,” said Hunter, who added that it is unclear when power will be restored to the university. Worst case scenario, Hunter said, is that it could take days for power to be restored.

Indianapolis department personnel arrived to the scene at about 4 p.m.

More details to follow as they become available.
